Arts Alive at the Orchard
The Orchard on 6th - FCC Tacoma
Sept|Oct 2024
Dear Friends,
As the vibrant hues of autumn paint the landscape, I’m thrilled to share the incredible creative journeys and community efforts unfolding within our artist family here at the Orchard on 6th and beyond.
Mindy Barker: Illuminating Our History
Mindy recently moved into a beautiful, light-filled studio, a space that perfectly complements her vibrant artistry. She’s currently pouring her talent into a mural for the Lakewood Historical Museum—a project that promises to bring our shared history to life in vivid color. She’s also preparing for the Tacoma Studio Tour on October 12th, where you can experience her work firsthand. Let’s come together to support her and celebrate the beauty she brings to our community!

Tori Fields: Exploring New Dimensions
Tori is diving deep into new artistic explorations for her Woolworth Window installation, which will be showcased next fall as a featured artist with Space Works. Her studio is abuzz with creativity as she gears up for October Arts Month Studio Tours, where she’ll be opening her doors to the public. It’s a wonderful opportunity to witness her bold vision and unique artistic voice.

Adam Martin: Music, Community, and Generosity
Adam’s work in our community continues to resonate deeply. After a successful Music and Heart in Wright Park 2024 festival, which featured the First Annual Sticker Fest, he’s turning his focus to the Stars 4 Peace clothing and needs drive. As we prepare for the cooler months, Adam is leading efforts to provide essential items for youth and women in need. His dedication to uplifting those around him is truly inspiring.
Upcoming Event: International Day of Peace, Sept 21 – Join us for the annual Destiny Saturday celebration!
Nate Dybevik: Cosmic Harmonies
Nate has been bringing a celestial touch to our musical community! As the new caretaker of practice room pianos at the University of Puget Sound, he’s ensuring these instruments are in top form for the next generation of musicians. Closer to home, his studio has undergone a cosmic transformation, sparking a wave of creativity that’s spreading throughout the space. His passion is inspiring a new wave of musical exploration, and the formation of the South Sound Piano Society promises to create a vibrant community of pianists sharing and growing together. He also wanted to share that he completed his first half marathon with his dad this summer and was able to craft a wooden horse for his young nephew!
Walker Sherman: Leading Through Music
Walker’s summer was filled with beautiful moments, from serving as a guitar tech at the Sunbanks Festival to stepping in at the last minute to lead a band through an unforgettable performance. His adaptability and skill continue to open new doors, including a management opportunity for all three Sunbanks festivals! His dedication to bringing people together through music is a true gift to our community.
Janelle Gordon: Healing Through Creativity
Janelle’s work as a Creative Transformational Guide is empowering others to heal and grow through a blend of yoga, meditation, and art. Her ongoing classes and workshops at The Orchard on 6th and surrounding YMCAs offer a nurturing space for individuals to connect with themselves and each other. Her vision for a solo showcase is an exciting development, and we look forward to seeing her unique blend of creativity and mindfulness on display.
Benjamin Chenovik (Ben Smith): A Summer of Connection and Creation
It has been a truly blessed season. Our Artist Monthly Dinners are back, filling the Orchard on 6th with warmth and camaraderie. I’ve been deeply inspired by the diverse ways our resident artists are building beauty and love into both our campus and the wider community. One of the most memorable worship experiences for me this year was our Owen Beach Worship Service and working Walker and Nate.
On a personal note, I had the joy of taking my daughter, Elie, on six camping trips across Washington this summer. From solo kayaking to horseback riding, we created memories that I will cherish forever.
Musically, my Liminal Spac3s tour has been an extraordinary journey. From the lush woods of Olalla, Washington, to the serene desert of Hacienda Hermosa, Arizona, I’ve had the privilege of sharing my spontaneous compositions in breathtaking outdoor settings. I’ve also released two new singles, “Wake Up Inner Earth Star” (Extended and Solo Piano versions), which you can find on all streaming platforms and Insight Timer. I hope these pieces bring a sense of peace and introspection to your own journey.
Upcoming Events:
Tacoma Studio Tour: October 12th, 11 am–5 pm. Visit our artists’ studios and experience their creative spaces.
Piano Recital: October 26th. We welcome volunteers to help us create a memorable event for our students and families.
For those looking to get involved, we have several opportunities to serve and support our artistic community. Feel free to reach out to me at ben@fcctacoma.org or connect with Nate, Tori, and Mindy directly.
Let’s continue to inspire each other and share our gifts with the world. Here’s to a season of growth, connection, and unremitting creativity!
With heartfelt gratitude,
